The signs are variable and not very specific. The onset is subtle and progression is usually slow. Unwillingness to move, slowness, drowsiness and sleepiness are most often seen. Other behavioural changes less often seen can be related to fear induced aggression. Deterioration of the skin – and coat quality can result in dull or brittle hair coat, hair loss and – retarded re-growth, hair that can be easily extracted from the skin, excessive pigmentation of the skin, very dry or sometimes very oily skin, inflammation which can result in skin infections. Thickening of the skin may present in a so-called ‘sad-face appearance”.
Weight gain can occur even though the diet has not changed.
